Recommended Links - how many is too many?
« on: June 28, 2013, 04:56:21 PM »
I launched a number of local niche sites several weeks ago.  A couple of them had made it onto page 1 for their main keyword, but as of yesterday, they have dropped back in the serps.  Granted, the sites are pretty new, but given the rapid rankings of Nichejet sites, it just seems my sites should be progressing up the serps at this point, not retreating.

In Jon's 7 Steps, there is the step of adding a "Recommended" section in the sidebar and adding an authoritative link.  With that concept in mind, and also taking into consideration Google's mantra to "concentrate on making the best site for your users", I created a few more related links that would be beneficial to users in these local markets.   I'm wondering if the Recommended links could be the issue for the poor rankings as when I look at competing sites on page 1, I don't see such sitewide outbound links.  Each of my sites has around a half-dozen recommended sites, all local (except one national site).   Perhaps that's too much of a good thing?

Just a quick reminder about the "Google Dance". It is not unusual to see new sites that rank quickly, Google's algorithms can shit them up and down for a couple of weeks or less. But then they will settle down.

Thanks, Ken.  So true.  It may just be me being overly anxious.  Wonder if those Nichejet sites that so quickly had #1 rankings still have them or have they since been invited to Google's dance.
