Increase SEO Benefits from Article Builder

Hey guys,

I would like to offer a suggestion to help make the automated article posting even better from Article Builder from an SEO perspective.

Currently, when an article gets posted automatically, it inserts Tags into it as well. The trouble with doing this, is that an article can appear on many different Tag pages, creating a lot of internal site duplicate content, which as we know, isn't good for SEO.

I would like to see a show of hands, and see if this is something that can either be removed from the automated article posting, or perhaps just offer it up as a flag in the Advanced Settings so those that want to, can switch it off?

This has been something that has been the subject of much discussion over the past years and the rule of thinking here, is that if you want no duplicate content in the site, you remove the tags.

There are plugins (All in one SEO) that allow you to No Index these, but this still isn't the ideal fix.

Any chance this could be considered?

Many thanks,

I never really understand the 'duplicate content' argument about using tags. I see tags as a navigation aid that also provides internal linking. How does using tags differ from putting categories in your menu or adding 'related posts' to your blog posts?

I feel tags help readers find content that might be of interest. They also help tell search engines what is important (what your site is about).

If I have any duplicate content concerns, it would be in indexing tag (or other taxonomy) pages. That could show duplicate post excerpts on multiple pages. I use a sitemap tool and turn off indexing for these types of pages.

I make no claims to being an expert on this. These are simply my views.

That said, I wouldn't object if AB made tags including tags an option.

Ajay, there's a fair chance that Matt Cutts was correct when he said that the folks at Google understand how WordPress works. I'd not worry about it but if concerned simply use Platinum SEO or similar to control the tags as you wish. My feeling is that, given that Google probably understand how WP works, tagging does what it is supposed to do and helps with exploration of the site for both humans and bots.

Vested interest or not, the fact that Google says they don't want pages with lots of duplicate content, I would take as a signal not to go creating them.

As I said, there are those who are not going to be particularly bothered and there are fixes though other plugins, but as it stands, the current setup doesn't even allow me to remove tags when posting via the automated jobs without having to go into the blog post itself, which kinda defeats the object a little. However, if I don't post an automated job and just create an article and then upload it to the blog, it doesn't add tags that way.

A simple tick box to switch this on or off would be nice then it's not forced on everyone. Having seen countless issues caused by these over the past years, it is something I am keen to avoid if possible.
