Both content and links are equally important. When it comes to content, it must be informative and links must be acquired from prominent and authoritative websites.

Yes, you need both to get visitors and keep visitors on your site.

But you can write the most interesting, original, out of the world content and it will do you no good unless somebody visits your site.

You can use paid traffic to get site visitors, you can get on talk shows and generate interest in your site content or you can get extremely lucky and get Oprah or one of the biggies to mention your site on their program and see your site traffic go through the roof.

But if you are like most of us, you depend on free traffic from Google (and Bing and Yahoo to a lesser extent) and that takes getting to the first page of Google, and to get really decent traffic, take one of the first five positions on the first page of Google.  And that takes links, lots of links, or a few good links on some of the PR 6 or higher ranked sites.

So while content is important it is hard not to decide that back links are the most important ingredient to get visitors to your web site.  I could provide the URL of a site that has 21 words on it along with a graphic.  The site is currently a pr 4 and has the number 4 position on the first page of Google for it's keyword.  The keyword receives 18,100 exact match searches per month so it is not a small long tail keyword but one with decent traffic.

The site only has 179 back links from 17 urls but two of the back links are pr 6 paid back links and several of the other back links are from pr 5 sites that he owns.

So it is not just back links that count, just as it is not just content that counts, but it is the quality of both back links and content.  And quality back links will beat out no content or quality content.

I think content must be unique if your content is unique, so Google will definitely crawl your link and increases your backlinks.....

Sorry, but you're dead wrong. Google will gladly index content that is not completely unique. Google will also rank sites using 100% low quality (almost pure trash) links. I know all of this from experience.

Don't drink the Google kool-aid. They make it a habit to lie to webmasters about what works in their search engine.

trust

but if you ask for content vs. links - both works: you can rank crap with enough links (been there, done that) and you can outrank major sites for competitive terms (insurance) with nothing but content. we have a lot of projects running proving that this works without any external link and no social signals whatsoever.

everything (links / content / trust) involves dedication and work. so pick what suits you most. :)

For the short term you can rank with trash content and trash back links.  But if you want to stay on the first page of Google then you need decent content and quality back links.

The content does not need to be more than 30% original from statements made from employees of Google in the past but the back links must be quality from a variety of sources if you wish to stay on the front page of Google long term.

I know all of us can find examples of trash sites on the first page of Google and when you check them they will have thousands of trash back links from just a few IP addresses.  But check back six months later and see how many of them are still on the first page of Google.  Over time Google does weed out the trash most of the time but not all the time.

Right now it is very easy to get to first page of Google with easy to moderate keywords.  It is still hard in the very and extremely competitive ranks but it can be done.

You can use articlebuilder.net exclusively for your content and rank on the first page of Google.  In my opinion it is better long term if you have some original content to go with the article builder content.  So I start out with 10 original articles on every site then I start dripping articlebuilder content into the sites.  I monitor my sites and they start to slip I add another original content article to them.

I also use a back link program to keep the number of back links increasing on my sites.  I use the first three months to build 1000 back links, 10% keyword anchor, 90% random text anchor.  I use a 30% keyword, 70% random text anchor from the fourth month on.  I never stop adding text nor build back links to my sites.

In the past I worked with html sites.  I would build a 10-20 page site of original content, create enough back links to get it to the first page of Google and then forget about it.  I have had html sites that stayed on the first page of Google for five years without adding additional content nor back links to them.  Those days are over.

Now I work with Wordpress and I update my sites on schedule and build back links on schedule.  In the past I maintained 1000 sites at a time.  Today I have problems keeping 100-150 sites ranking well.  There are more people trying to do what I do, they are better educated in SEO and it takes more work to achieve results than it did in the past.

So I repeat that it takes content and back links but back links are more important than content.  "Build them and they will come " simply does not work.  If you are going to use ArticleBuilder.net for your content then be sure to use AB to set up the drip feed of the content into your blogs.  This gives you the full power of AB.

For me, content, if you don't have good content then all the backlinks going to your website is such a waste.

For me, content, if you don't have good content then all the backlinks going to your website is such a waste.

You can have perfect content but it is worthless if your web site ranks 1099 in Google as nobody but you will ever see that perfect content.

If your back links rank you on the first page of Google you can sell links on that page.  There are advertising companies that pay $150 a year for an article with one link in the article text back to their client sites.  However your site must rank on the first page of Google to qualify.  I have three sites with them right now where I have sold them a page on the site for $150.  I have other sites on the first page of Google where I sell links in the article or on the sidebars of the sites.

These people could care less about the content I have on the sites, what they are buying are the first page positions on Google.  They know people will see my sites due to my sites position and people will see their links because of my sites position.

It is extremely rare to obtain a first page position with just content.

Content is one of the principle ways of attracting visitors to consider your website and inform them about your business. Visitors to your website are far more likely to become customers to your store; whether online or in-person.
