A tool for viewing any web page on a mobile device.
« on: September 08, 2010, 07:07:03 AM »
THIS THREAD IS NOT FOR DISCUSSING OTHER PRODUCTS OR WEB SITES Please refrain from doing so.  I am looking only for feedback about SmallerWeb.com.  Thanks!

Okay guys, I've worked up a little algorithm for reformatting any web page to fit well on a mobile device.  It's not perfect, but works pretty good for most pages.  I've created a Bing-based search tool that automatically reformats the results.  Here's the link:

http://smallerweb.com/

If you use an iOS device (iPhone, iPod, iPad), an Android device or a Blackberry images will be included in the reformatted pages, otherwise it will be text only.

Let me know what you think.

Oh, and a few things to note:

The algorithm does not attempt to include forms, since the forms would only post to pages that aren't mobile-friendly anyway.

Hi john,

I use a regular Chinese brand mobile phone. I tried your new tool but the connection failed.
I will try with another mobile phone which have wifi connection. I live in China and it is getting late.
My iphone is in my office.
By the way I am trying to purchase youe ebook "1000 Visitors In 24 Hours". I do not have a PayPal
account. May I make a payment by credit card?

Best Regards,
Djibo

It looks like it takes sidebars and makes them go away.  Unfortunately, this also makes navigation go away on many sites.  It kept the top or bottom navigation but often that only has home, contact us, privacy, etc.

I tried it on my wife's site for example. www.novicehorseman.com and the Navigation does not show up in left sidebar.  Not sure how you would get around this.  It would be ugly but maybe side bars could go below the page or you would have a way to select them.  That is... a button to pop from the center to the sidebar and back.  Dunno.

It is cool what it does do though.

Jonathan

first off i think if you get this to work it will be a fantastic tool - add a little of your own adwords and you will be made

but it will need a lot of work - you might consider making a proper iphone app to handle the code

i gave it a try on a iphone 3G

tried a couple of sites - did not work at all

tried apple.com site - and yes it works but not right - duplicated images so not quite right ( the apple site does not even have an iphone version )

even tried to search on jonathan ledger - and jonathanledger.com did not work too great

tried cnn.com - that worked better - useable

i think you are on the right track here - i will save smaller web on the home screen and keep trying it out to see how it develops

My site is jonathanleger.com and that looks very good on my iOS devices. Did you try that one?  I'll look at the others.

It's an excellent idea, Jonathan. Can you piggyback it with advertising sort of like the way Google does adsense for search?

Is it public enough that I could make it available to my website's visitors?

Hi Jonathan,

Tried it on my windows PDA and it worked reasonably well but the navigation gets destroyed. I tried my company's website www.grovefp.co.uk and then viewed it normally. Although a lot of graphics don't show the navigation is available although I had to search for it. I think this is another of your creations that will be tweaked and tweaked.

Is there another way? Is it possible to design a site that has versions for PDA's / iPhones etc as well as normal views and then detects the type of browser and sends you through the right route. As more and more people use these mobile devices I can see this dual optimization approach becoming more usual or in some cases required.

Jon,

SIMPLIFY THIS IDEA!

Quit trying to make the whole WEB mobile compliant.

Just create a product that formats CB sales pages, affiliate websites, and other product pages into mobile compliant pages.

I just want to drive traffic to my mobile sites that are mobile compliant for marketing and sales.

Nice app, works well on my iPhone 4.

i have an additional idea:

The string below, when added as a bookmarklet, increases the font size and reflows the text in Safari (most the it works pretty good). So you can zoom in and don't have to do the annoying horizontal scroll.....

javascript:for(i=0;i<document.getElementsByTagName%20('*')%20.length;i++)void(document.getElementsByTagName('*'%20)%20.style.fontSize='18pt')

If it's possible to integrate this with your app, this would make it really great.

Hi Jon,

I tried it on blackberry bold 9700. The one drawback of the bb browser is that when you open a page, you have to zoom it so you can read the wordings.

The word size of the search result is pretty good, but when I click the one of the link, the page open up in a readable size for a sec or two, then it zoom out and I have to manually zoom in to get a readable size.

That's what I have right now.
