i had a mobile phone for 11 years and I used it for emergencies only - about £4 per year!
Three years ago I started to get unwanted, unauthorised text messages coming in all day and all night.
I didn't know where they came from or how to stop them...
In a few hours, my mobile airtime account, which I keep at about £20 for emergencies only, was pulled down to zero.
I topped it up to £20 again and in one day it was emptied again.
When I contacted my mobile phone network, they were unable to tell me where these messages came from,
nor could they stop them.
They gave me a premium rate number to call about this, but it was never answered - day or night.
I discovered that these messages were costing me £1.50 per time, taken from my airtime balance,
even if my phone was switched off?
When my third £20 top-up started to run down, I had no choice but to get a new SIM card,
to change my mobile number, in order to stop the fraud. I never got my money back...
I don't know how to send a text message, nor wil I ever want to learn how to do it.
I consider text messaging to be an abomination of my beautiful English language.
I think that thousands of children are leaving school unable to read/write or understand the English language now.
I'm told that Universities are awarding degrees to students who are incapable of writing a simple letter in English.
I would give my whole-hearted support to anybody who could ban the use of text messaging completely.
