Need advice on Link Removal Request
« on: March 18, 2013, 06:22:57 AM »
I own a website that dates back to 2006 and dishes out various search results. Theses pages are monetised through ads though I don't earn much now.

I have received Link Removal Request from a site that finds place in one such page which is a search result. The threat is we'll report to Google that you are not removing these links. Today I received the third and final reminder that also talks about compensation if I remove these links.

I'd appreciate advice on this.

Regards
SNM

What kind of link is it? Have they set it themselves, like a blog comment or is it a link that you deliberately set because you think it gives value to your readers?

In general terms if you are receiving threats then I'd not give in.

Think of this, if you remove links in this way you are ending a clear signal to Google that YOU think your site is of poor quality.

If these folks are serious they will click the 'disavow link' option in Google's Webmaster tools and, unless you get lots and lots and lots of clicks then nothing will happen.

If they were sensible people they'd have already clicked the disavow link button.

I though about putting up a PayPal button and charging $10 per link removed - I did not do it... YET.

I bet that if you removed the link they'd not pay you, you are almost certainly dealing with some cheap-jack SEO firm who are reselling their unnecessary link removal services.

$10? I always inform people that I charge $250 per link removal. Funny thing is that I never hear from them again after that...

Good to hear we agree on the principal though!

Why so cheap?   I received such a demand that his link be removed from all pages on a site that has 8500 indexed pages.  And of course he did not provide a list of the pages with the link but demanded I find them and remove the links.

I emailed him back that I did not add links to that site.  Any link on the site was added by the link owner or somebody associated with the link owner.  I do not have time to search through 8500 pages on a site to find links that may or may not belong to him.

However if he is willing to provide me a list of pages that contain such links and pay me $50 for my time then I will remove the links for him.  I told him that if he was unwilling to search through the pages to find the links that he placed on my site then why does he expect me to spent my time doing this?  And if he is not willing to pay me for my time to remove links he placed on my site then why should I waste my time to do so?  After all, I did not ask for the links, he filled out the comment form on the site pages to get the links so he should be willing to spend his time identifying the links and pay me for my time to remove what he placed on my site.

I have not heard back from him nor do I expect to hear back from him.  :)

But I wouldn't consider doing it for less than $50, after he identified the pages with the links to be removed.

And I accused Andrew for being cheap for $10, only to find I am being cheap by asking $50.  I like your price better, the next time I will ask $250.  :)

I have not done this and probably won't, usually I just ignore messages but as you may recall from another thread here, recently I had cause to do battle with an idiot telling lies about his link building. ;)

However, in most cases folks actually have presented me with lists of where the links are but as I reckon that most of these folks are low paid button pushers I doubt that even $5 or $10 would be low enough to incentivise them to pay.
