emails to blogs - can they be dangerous to answer?
« on: August 11, 2010, 03:28:31 PM »
Am I just being paranoid? I started The Best Spinner tutorials blog to give some information for people who needed to know how to use TBS. I got an email addressed to the tutorials today, asking to link to the website that they are linked to. I have not advertised that website anywhere, I started it up to do the beta test for Blog Site Builder and created the TBS tutorials as a way of beta testing BSB. The TBS tutorials have only been mentioned on this forum and the website has not been forwarded to google or anything, so I am assuming that only someone on this forum would know about the website.

The email is perfectly polite, asking to link BUT the information I get from the host shows the person's email (gmail) IP and address - with a .ru domain and their website, which is a blog with an innocuous name but when I went there, the English is very poor and the blog doesn't really mean anything.

If someone writes to me, I like to answer but having already had one of my email addresses hijacked, so spam was sent out to all my contacts, and having had to unsubscribe and generally cut the email down to limit damage, I don't feel like having to do that again.

I am an enthusiastic computer user and simple website builder - not an expert or a programmer. Does anyone know whether, if I answer this person from my email address, they could then hack the email? I understand that they may wish to link to any site they can manage, in order to get another backlink. I don't want to link to that site because it doesn't fit with my TBS blog and I am NOT a 1-way, 2-way, 3-way or anyway links member of any similar program, so I can link, or not, to whomever I choose.

Anyone any comments or suggestions please?
Thanks

Meg, If I were you I probably would not answer it unless, I answered it from one of my
junk email addresses.

Today, I received a notice from gmail that my main site email address had been compromised,
it gave me an IP address which showed no website at that address.

Gmail told me to change my password, so I did!

But, unless you recognize the name, or have requested someone write you at a particular
address. I DEFINITELY WOULD NOT ANSWER IT FROM MY MAIN ACCOUNT, ACTUALLY I
WOULD GO AND CHANGE THE PASSWORD FOR THE SITE EMAIL ACCOUNT RIGHT NOW!!

Probably being paranoid, but you can't be to sure who it is.
